Presentation of the 2016–2017 season

Music, Theatre, and Dance in the 2016–2017 season: journeys within a journey

Designed as a travel journal, the programme of shows and performances takes the form of a fascinating journey, with four parts: firstly, a premiere performance in the evening by the Syrian jazz saxophonist Basel Rajoub, followed by the Arab rock band Cairokee (a combination of the words Cairo and Karaoke), and Hindi Zahra, who has more than one string—not just Beautiful Tango (an international hit)—to her eclectic bow. To complete these performances of contemporary music, an evening at the Petit Bain will bring together the Arabian rock of Temenik Electrik and the explosive Mehdi Haddab, the famousʿūd player in the band Speed Caravan.

The second part will be devoted to dance, from the East to Asia: from Dabke with the Dabket Loubnane Lebanese dance troupe to Alchimie (‘Alchemy’), performed by Raghunath Manet and Hafida Chader.

The next part, which has a traditional flavour, gives carte blanche to Waed Bouhassoun, who has invited Syrian, Armenian, and Kurdish artistes, and concludes with a concert of Chaabi with Abdelkader Chaou and Kamel Aziz and the Catalan singer Maria del Mar Bonet.

There are two unique events in the autumn: the first edition of ‘La Nuit de la Poésie’ (‘Poetry night’, 12 November) and the second edition of ‘La Fête de la Langue Arabe’ (‘A celebration of Arabic’, 18 December).

From January to June 2017—the aim is not to nourish nostalgia, but to endeavour to highlight the heritage and the cultural associations between the fragments of heritage in the Arab world and in other lands—, the season will continue with, among others, Chicuelo, Las Migas, the Nakache Brothers, Zad Moultaka, Nadia Khaless, Adnan Joubran, Inna Modja, Manu Dibango, artistes from the new Arab musical scene, flamenco, dance, and theatre with a performance of Le Rouge du Tarbouche (‘The Red of the Fez’), after the novel by Abdellah Taïa.
