À partir des trésors conservés dans les collections du musée de l’IMA, cette exposition met en lumière une richesse et une diversité à nulle autre pareilles : celles de la calligraphie arabe dans toute son expression, des premiers feuillets du Coran à son investissement dans les nouveaux médias.

Through rare pieces drawn entirely from the collections of the Institut du monde arabe’s museum, “Writing or calligraphy ? The Sublimation of the Arabic Alphabet” explores the ancient art of Arabic calligraphy, from its spiritual origins to its contemporary presence in public space, and traces the evolution of a practice that transcends writing to become a powerful aesthetic, spiritual, and cultural expression.

Dans la langue arabe, le terme khatt désigne simultanément l’écriture et la calligraphie, c’est-à-dire l’art du bel écrit suivant des codes de proportions et d’harmonie. Des premiers feuillets du Coran à la photographie contemporaine, en passant par l’architecture ou les objets du quotidien, la calligraphie se déploie depuis des siècles dans tous les aspects de la vie quotidienne. En sublimant l’alphabet arabe, elle lui confère une spiritualité et une énergie que la seule écriture ne saurait retranscrire.

Chaque génération de calligraphes, depuis les premières normes instaurées au IXe siècle, a promu une innovation faisant évoluer les styles. Depuis les années 1960, de nombreux plasticiens du monde arabe ont exploré le patrimoine de la calligraphie classique, donnant naissance au mouvement de la hurufiyya, s’affranchissant de la littéralité de l’écrit et manipulant le dessin des lettres à la recherche d’un langage visuel panarabe.

Aujourd’hui, les calligraphes investissent les nouveaux médias, rendant poreuse la frontière avec le design et les arts plastiques. Le geste calligraphique laisse également, depuis la fin du siècle dernier, son empreinte sur les murs des villes, devenus les supports du street-art.

“Writing or calligraphy ? The Sublimation of the Arabic Alphabet” highlights the richness and diversity of Arabic calligraphy. From the earliest Quranic manuscripts to contemporary street art, from architecture to everyday objects, calligraphy is omnipresent. A true vehicle of artistic and spiritual expression, it imbues the Arabic alphabet with a unique vitality that extends far beyond its functional role as script.

Since the 10th century, when calligraphic norms were formalized, calligraphers have continuously pushed the boundaries of their craftexperimenting with new materials and abstract forms. Some artists have even broken away from literal meaning, focusing solely on the visual purity of the script. Others, in more recent times, have brought calligraphy to urban walls, granting it a new visual and social dimension.

Arabic calligraphy, a cornerstone in the construction of Arab-Muslim civilization, has crossed borders to be reinterpreted and reimagined around the globe. Today, it transcends geography and stands as a universal language, a symbol of beauty and creativity. By celebrating this art form, the exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the role of writing and calligraphy in the transmission of knowledge, culture, and identity.
